We're wrapping up our series on the five Fundamental Truths from Mark Douglas's Trading in the Zone. If you missed the earlier posts, we covered anything can happen, you don't need to know what happens next to make money, there's a random distribution between wins and losses, and an edge is just a higher probability. Today we land on truth number five.
Every moment in the market is unique.
This one feels like it should be obvious. But it's sneaky, because our brains are constantly working against us on this.
It's natural human nature to look at a chart and think, "I've seen this before." We spot a pattern. A setup. A formation that reminds us of something that happened six months ago or six years ago. And we instinctively believe that because it happened before, it can surely happen again. Market participants say it all the time: there's nothing new under the sun. Everything that has happened will happen again because of human nature.
I agree with that on the surface. History does rhyme. Patterns do repeat. Human nature doesn't change much.
But what Douglas points out is that although events and moments might feel similar, they are most assuredly unique. Why? Because markets move based on the actions of humans. And for one moment to be exactly the same as another, you'd have to have the exact same traders making the exact same decisions with the exact same size at the exact same times as before.
Impossible.
Every situation is therefore unique. Every trade exists in its own context with its own participants and its own set of circumstances that have never existed before and will never exist again. That chart pattern that looks just like last March? Different traders are looking at it. Different money is behind it. Different fears and hopes are driving it.
This matters because when we assume the present will play out exactly like the past, we get rigid. We stop responding to what's actually happening and start reacting to a memory. And memories make for lousy trading signals.
Yes, we can allow our memories of the past to remind us that anything is possible. That's truth number one, and it still applies. But we need to remain rooted to the undeniable fact that every moment is unique. Stay curious. Stay open. Respond to what's in front of you right now.
That's the work. All five truths, every single day.
Every trade we take at All Star Options is evaluated on its own merits, in its own moment. No recycled ideas, no stale setups. Fresh eyes, defined risk, every time. Come see for yourself.
