If you understand what drives crypto bear markets, you know exactly what to buy when they end.
Every bear market purges what didn't work. The trade is simply buying the new and improved players that fill the void left behind.
2022 proved this. That bear market exposed fraudulent operators. FTX collapsed, BlockFi followed, and over $20B in funds were stranded. Trust in exchanges, intermediaries, and custodians hit an all-time low.
That was the void.
And in the years that followed, it was filled by Coinbase, BlackRock, audited financial institutions, and decentralized exchanges. Buying that trust rebuild was the trade that defined the 2023–2025 bull run.
Now look at today. This bear market isn't about fraud. It's a structural repricing of the entire asset class. Investors are finally recognizing that we don't need 100 different blockchains doing basically the same thing, and we don't need thousands of tokens that neither capture nor create any real value.
Even Vitalik Buterin, the creator of Ethereum, acknowledged this week that the technologies built on top of Ethereum to help it scale have been taking more value than they've been giving back. Many of them simply aren't needed.
This is exactly why I radically shifted my crypto investment approach beginning last year.
When the next bull run arrives, what matters isn't just adoption, it's whether a protocol can monetize that adoption and distribute the value it creates back to token holders. A handful of names are already doing this, and they're the ones holding up best through this correction. I own them, and my portfolio is relatively unscathed because of it.
This is why I'm optimistic. This entire asset class has been one giant experiment, improving incrementally cycle after cycle. Fraud gets flushed out. Infrastructure matures. Value capture gets refined. Each bear market leaves the ecosystem stronger than the last.
If you're an optimist, you don't dwell on the wreckage, you look for how the market improves upon the flaws of the previous cycle. That's where the opportunities live.
So ignore the noise about this volatility. Pay attention to the void this bear market is creating, and who's best positioned to fill it.
That's where the gold is buried.
