Zen

These past couple of weeks, I walked through Mark Douglas's five Fundamental Truths from Trading in the Zone. Here they are, all in one place:

1. Anything can happen.

2. You don't need to know what is going to happen next in order to make money.

3. There is a random distribution between wins and losses for any given set of variables that define an edge.

4. An edge is nothing more than an indication of a higher probability of one thing happening over another.

5. Every moment in the market is unique.

I wrote about each of these individually, and I'd encourage you to go back and read them if you missed any. But today I want to talk about what happens when you actually absorb all five together. When they stop being ideas you agree with and start becoming the lens through which you see the markets.

Zen.

That's the word that keeps coming to mind. And I don't use it lightly.

When I'm trading my best, I'm like a zen monk when interacting with the markets. I'm not emotionless. I'm not a robot. I have preferences and opinions and excitement just like the rest of us. But there's a level of detachment from market price action that sets these moments apart. A calm. A groundedness. I can watch a position go against me without panicking. I can watch a winner run without getting greedy. I respond instead of react.

That detachment is rooted in these five truths. Whether they've read Douglas or not, the best traders I know operate from these principles instinctively. They've accepted that anything can happen. They've stopped needing to be right. They understand the randomness within their edge. They know that probability and certainty are different animals. And they treat every moment as fresh.

That's the goal. That's what we're after.

My advice is simple. Keep these five truths handy. Print them out. Put them on a sticky note next to your monitor. And review them regularly. Not just read them. Ask yourself honestly: how am I living these truths?

Am I truly accepting that anything can happen, or am I still clinging to predictions? Am I letting a string of losses shake my confidence in a process that works? Am I projecting the past onto a moment that has never existed before?

Be honest with yourself.

Market mastery resides within you. Your answers to these questions will show you the way.
