The Energy Trade Has Lied Before

If you’ve traded energy long enough, you know this feeling.

You see the breakout.
You see the momentum.
You lean in.

And then it disappears.

Energy has faked us out more than once over the past few years. Rallies that looked real. Breakouts that didn’t stick. Strength that never followed through. Each time, the chart teased just enough to pull people in before rolling back over.

That’s not just failure.
That’s information.

This is why I don’t chase energy blindly. I want confirmation — not from headlines, not from narratives, but from intermarket signals.

And the chart you’re looking at shows exactly what I need to see next.

What Didn’t Happen in 2024

In 2024, energy tried to break out.

But bonds didn’t cooperate.

The Energy Sector ETF pushed higher, but long-duration Treasury bonds refused to break down. Rates never delivered the pressure needed to fuel sustained upside in energy equities.

That lack of confirmation mattered.

Energy can rally on its own for short bursts — but when bonds stay supported, those rallies tend to stall. That’s exactly what happened. No follow-through. No legs.

What Would Change Everything

Now let’s talk about what would get my attention.

I want to see energy breaking out at the same time bonds are breaking down.

Not one.

Both.

That tells me capital is rotating:

Away from safety

Away from duration

Toward real assets, cash flows, and inflation-sensitive sectors

That’s the environment where energy trends don’t just pop — they persist.

If bonds lose support as energy clears resistance, that’s confirmation we never got last year. And that’s the signal that tells me this trade is no longer just noise.

That’s when it has legs.

The Psychology of Waiting

Chuck Palahniuk once wrote:

“Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everyone I’ve ever known.”

Markets are the same way.

No single chart tells the story. No single breakout proves the case. Real trends are the combined effort of multiple forces lining up at once.

Energy doesn’t need hope.
It needs confirmation.

I’m not early here.
I’m not late either.

I’m patient — and I’m watching one thing.

If bonds break down while energy breaks out, the lie turns into truth.
